The Daily Pujols – 02.16-17.2011

On the morning of January 19th, I started collecting links – as many as I can find with minimal effort – that discuss the Albert Pujols contract discussions. Why? Who knows, yet here they are. Oh, and to serve you all, our three loyal readers! The Daily Pujols certainly won’t be a comprehensive list, but between local, national, and blog coverage, maybe you’ll find something here you otherwise wouldn’t. Without further delay, here is today’s Daily Pujols…

Local

KPLR in St. Louis suggests that every person who resides in the St. Louis metro chip in $107 dollars and make this contract for Pujols academic.

Jeff Gordon both makes it easy on the DP but also steals some of our thunder, listing out links…we’re over it.

More from KPLR, this time playing the charity card for Pujols – LAYING IT ON THICK MANG.

Oh darn, the owners of Pujols5 in Westport are disappointed there’s no deal. Does anyone in town, besides the Cardinals, have more to lose than these guys, if Pujols leaves?

Dennis killed it here, if I may say so myself. Very coherent statement to both sides of the argument. RELAX. Strong.

National

Jeremy Sandler of the NationalPost.com suggests that Tony La Russa‘s MLBPA accusations were merely a ploy to deflect criticism from Albert Pujols. Um, yep.

Mel Antonen at SI.com couldn’t resist asking Stan Musial about Albert Pujols instead of the Presidential Medal of Freedom award he had just received. Shame.

Jeff Schultz, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, tries to figure a way for Pujols to fit into the Atlanta Braves’ payroll. Isn’t everyone?!?! Schultz is a good dude, read his stuff.

LaVelle Neal writes that Joe Mauer is “not surprised” that Pujols set a deadline to avoid distraction. My question is still: how do they now avoid the distraction this creates in-season?

Let the spin begin. Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com says that the Yankees have no intention of pursuing Pujols, because they don’t have anywhere to play him. Whee!

THANK YOU! Ray Ratto breaks things down as they are. Slow news week. “Distraction” is just another word for negotiating ploy. Ditto “deadline. Read this.

Friend of PH8 Will Leitch says the Cardinals didn’t screw anything up negotiating with Pujols, they just aren’t the Yankees.

Keith Whitmire thinks that the Rangers’ recent television windfall means that Texas can be a player for AP.

Mike Lopresti puts $30 million per year into perspective. Stan Musial once asked for a pay cut, down to $75,000. Albert Pujols would make that in just over four innings. Gross.

Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com fails in his premise with the first line. Good luck getting Mang to DH, Gordo.

Bob Lutz of The Wichita Eagle is against “anti-filthyrichism.” I’m listening…

Ben Wallace and Tayshaun Prince TOTALLY know baseball. Just see what they have to say… *rolleyes*

Carlos Marmol tells Gordon Wittenmyer that the Cubs should sign Pujols so he doesn’t have to face AP anymore. TOTALLY WORTH $300 MILLION.

Alex Speier uses lots of words to figure out something that could’ve been done in one or two.

Ed Price says the Cardinals have taken the same approach to Pujols that the Yankees did with Derek Jeter, only more subtly. Go ahead, test the market. (side note: FanHouse still exists?)

Pete Abraham at the Boston Globe explores how the Red Sox can afford The Machine.

Larry Stone at The Seattle Times takes a different approach than those seen elsewhere amongst this madness – Which teams have NO CHANCE to sign Pujols? Strangely, I’ve seen some of these teams on “where will he go?” lists too. Hrmm.

Blogs

Hayden Goethe figures Pujols will stay with the Cardinals.

Pip at Fungoes, always the bastion of reason and analysis (and I mean that in a good way), shows that the Cards can win without Mang.

A post at Crawfish Boxes states, among other reasons, that the Houston Astros should sign Pujols “because it would hack off Cardinals fans.” Isn’t that why Uncle Drayton is in trouble already, reasons like that for contracts? Oh yeah, and apparently Pujols would waive his no-trade to go to Houston? Anyone heard that one yet?

NY Baseball Digest asks – can Pujols lead the Mets to the World Series?

Bluebird Banter asks if Pujols might wind up with the Toronto Blue Jays. Well, he might, especially if they scale an offer to Pujols off of the recent Jose Bautista contract. YEEEEEEESH.

Further ammo from Pujols (via Hardball Talk) that the reported numbers being floated are pretty speculative. Preeeeetttttyyyy speculative. Or we’re all being played for fools. Also possible.
